The Centers for Disease Control say chronic diseases – such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and arthritis – are among the most common, costly, and preventable (emphasis mine) of all health problems in the U.S. 7 out of 10 deaths among Americans each year are from chronic diseases. Heart disease, cancer and stroke account for more than 50% of all deaths. I could go on and on.
The sad fact is that this is preventable! I’ll say it another way. Americans could choose to avoid this! Why don’t we??? Instead we have chosen to continue to do (and not do) what we have always done (and not done) at greatly increased risks of death and disability. Where is the logic? Where is the common sense?
Welcome to my blog! I am a health care provider that sees things a bit differently. Notice the title of this page isn’t about the health care crisis (more accurately, the health insurance crisis). I believe in getting to the root of the problem and the perception of health care crisis is just a symptom. My view of health and health care is not the mainstream view. In fact, I am extremely frustrated with the current popular paradigm that focuses on disease instead of health.
There is a better way. It is not the easy path, but then again, anything worth having is worth working for. Unfortunately, the easy path is made easy by the ones to which we have surrendered control of our health. All of this can be turned around by making one change. The problem is that this may be the most difficult thing to change in this world. It is to change our minds. It is to change the way we think about health. And once we understand what health truly is, we will change the way we think about health care. That’s what this blog is all about.
If you are the average American, be prepared to be challenged. If you’re already on board, be prepared to be encouraged and to receive some tools to use in spreading the word. Knowledge is not enough to motivate change. If it were, the tobacco industry would have died long ago. With information and a little humor along the way, my goal is to make this knowledge real to you, to connect you with it like I am connected with it. I hope you find it valuable enough to share with others. That’s the only way I can make a difference – with your help. There is too much at stake. We have to change for our own sake, and for the sake of our future.
